Busy Markets and Arcades That Realize "Kuidaore, Osaka"

Osaka is known in Japanese as "Kuidaore no Machi," quite literally "The City Where You Eat 'Till You Drop.'" Its busy marketplaces and arcades help realize Osaka's position as Japan's gourmet food capital.

Hara Doburoku

Hara Doburoku is a special product from Takatsuki City, which is unfiltered sake made from special rice grown in the northern regions there. Takatsuki City is bestowed with both lush forests and extensive rice paddies.

Suntory Yamazaki Distillery

Yamazaki, formerly Shimamoto Village, was especially chosen by Kotobuki Ltd. (Now Suntory Ltd.) founder Shinjiro Torii, as the location for Japan's first whisky distillery, for its humid climate and pure water.

There are six direct-to-consumer fish markets in fishery ports of Osaka, where fresh locally-caught fish is sold. There is an overwhelming selection of fish available with varieties including flounder, sole, conger eel, octopus, squid, crab, shrimp, etc. Shoppers have an amazingly large selection from which they can enjoy choosing the best ingredients for dinner!

In this museum, which was opened in 1999, visitors can learn about the importance of discovery and invention through hands-on experience making chicken ramen.

Maple Tempura

Maple Leaf Tempura, a popular souvenir from Minoh City, is said to have come into existence about 1,300 years ago, when an ascetic undergoing training near Mt. Minoh was captivated by the beauty of maple trees reflected in a waterfall. In appreciation of this experience, the ascetic is said to have made a maple leaf tempura in order to experience a taste of nature.

Sudare Museum

The museum houses traditional crafts, such as "Osaka Kongo Sudare," along with sudare blinds from China, South Korea and Southeast Asia. The Museum introduces the techniques and the history of these traditional crafts.

Ono Grapes

The grapes cultivated in southern Sayama City are loved all-over Japan.

Deep-Fried Gatcho

The official name of this fish is nezumigochi. Locals in the Senshu Region call it "gatcho." It's great for deep-frying.

Senshu Eggplant

This is a local product of the Senshu region. The eggplants are mainly cultivated in the southeast area of Kishiwada City.

Ebiimo aroids are produced in very small quantities, the variety being one of the rarest agricultural products to be designated as a "Naniwa Exclusive Product." Due to the care taken during cultivation, this variety of aroid is recognized as one of the finest in Japan
